The Denver Broncos and San Diego Chargers have reached agreement on a rare inter-divisional trade. The Broncos have been attempting to trade Stafford for some time, but have not been able to find a partner to provide a fair offer that could be approved. We have finally been able to reach such an agreement.
Denver Bronco's trade:
QB Matthew Stafford 16/$17.00 & 17/$16.50
Broncos pay $8.00M on Stafford in 2016
San Diego Chargers trade:
LB Wesley Woodyard 16/$9.00 & 17/$9.00
2017 San Diego Chargers 1st Round Pick
2018 San Diego Chargers 3rd Round Pick
Chargers pay $3.50M on Woodyard in 2017
The Chargers have Carson Palmer on the second year of a Franchise tag and need to set up a longer term QB for the Chargers future. Providing the Broncos with what will be their #2 LB, a 2017 1st and a 2018 3rd for Stafford is fair return. The 2016 Cap by the Broncos on Stafford is necessary to fit him into the salary structure at this late date in the season. The salary cap repayment by the Chargers in 2017 is repayment, proportionate to the salary, for the 2016 cap payment by the Broncos.
It's a fair and well crafted deal that benefits both franchises without a major change in league balance in either 2016 or 2017. Good dealing Shane.
